Historical context Previous attempts at equality The Declaration of the Rights of Woman is significant because it brought attention to a set of what would later be known as feminist concerns that collectively reflected and influenced the aims of many French Revolutionaries and other contemporaries. As a result of her writings (including the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen), de Gouges was accused, tried and convicted of treason, resulting in her immediate execution, along with the Girondists, becoming one of only three women beheaded during the ensuing Reign of Terror – and the only executed for her political writings. By publishing this document on 15 September, de Gouges hoped to expose the failures of the French Revolution in the recognition of gender equality. The Declaration of the Rights of Woman and of the Female Citizen ( French: Déclaration des droits de la femme et de la citoyenne), also known as the Declaration of the Rights of Woman, was written on 14 September 1791 by French activist, feminist, and playwright Olympe de Gouges in response to the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. It is a tragic tale of the consequences resulting from the quest for status among the country people. First published in MACMILLAN S MAGAZINE, this is a novel of unrequited love set in the country near the Blackmoor Vale of Dorset. ![]() A nice copy with less than the usual normal wear or rubbing to the cloth and end papers. ![]() 8vo, original dark green very-fine bead-grain cloth, blocked in black and lettered in gold with dark chocolate end papers.
